Stucco and Parging FAQs

Parging refers to the application of a cement coating over a wall surface, like a foundation, exterior wall or masonry. It can add a stylish element to a cement block wall or repair a chimney when the brick has deteriorated. Parging creates a smooth surface to which waterproofing coatings may then be applied. Parging provides extra protection for the concrete or block wall beneath while also providing a neat, finished look.

While traditional Stucco uses a combination of mesh and natural ingredients, EIFS (External Insulation and Finishing Systems) uses layers that add synthetic materials. These layers provide more protection and insulation than regular Stucco. EIFS has a higher R-value than traditional Stucco and is more flexible – resulting in less cracking and crumbling from thermal expansion or shifting foundations. EIFS Stucco is more challenging to apply and requires an experienced EIFS Stucco installer.

Stucco can help protect your home and its foundation against rain and snow. Because it is applied by hand, it can be textured in a variety of ways, lending itself to creative embellishments – use it to mimic stone, marble, granite or brick. Stucco can be tinted, ensuring a more colourfast result than paint. Stucco is also more affordable than many alternatives, making it exceptionally popular. While Stucco can last 50 years or longer, it requires some maintenance. Stucco is durable and offers character to your home while protecting it from the elements.
